GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN 18th edition
Discipline : Landscape & Territories
Categories : Urban Design / Urban Design Plan : Gold certification
The campus project spans 3 adjacent blocks, situated within a sector bounded by Montée des Pionniers, Chemin de la Croisée, Coulée Verte, and the Ruisseau de Feu linear park. The new buildings are positioned around a vast, continuous pedestrian realm, acting as an elevated linear park dedicated to pedestrians — the University Promenade — which covers elevated parking levels and connects the pavilions. Mindful of street animation, the complex features street-front shops and public facilities at streetside. This innovative design eliminates the need for underground parking on a rocky site with a high-water table, while maximizing pedestrian space.
The university component is envisioned as 4 six-story pavilions along the University Promenade, arranged in "spurs" to open views and maximize sunlight. The tallest buildings align with the residential towers to the north. The sports and cultural facilities are grouped together to create a civic hub. The three sites are connected by a continuous pedestrian realm. The eastern block includes a swimming pool and gymnasium, along with the student residences.
Developed according to Transit-Oriented Development principles, the project promotes active design, with a layout focused on pedestrian and cyclist pathways, encouraging the daily use of stairs. Ultimately, the project will feature the largest continuous pedestrian realm in Quebec. Focused on sustainability, the plan targets ambitious carbon reduction goals, including a "thermal loop" that centralizes and optimizes the energy consumption of the university neighborhood.
