As we envisioned the Visitor Journey Experience for the renewed Australian Museum, our priorities were to
create a welcoming, clear, respectful, unique and accessible experience for all; to integrate First Nations
principles; and to bridge the Museum’s heritage architecture with the new contemporary addition.
Our firm collaborated with the Museum’s First Nations team to create an aesthetic that reflected the land and waterways on which the Museum stands. The team drew inspiration from natural landscapes, such as mountains, trees, and rivers. Scarred trees that provide wood or bark for the creation of cultural objects were an influence as they have played a part in sharing knowledge and living in balance for millennia on the lands now known as Australia. All wayfinding signage is created with a duality of positive and negative shapes, representing what humans take from nature and what is left behind. Attention to detail was central to the realization of this program: most of the signs are bespoke to accommodate
their individual placements
The signage is made from Blackbutt hardwood, which is endemic to eastern Australia. The bronze balustrades from the central stairway of the Museum’s 1960s Parkes Farmer Building were reclaimed and repurposed into sculptural level numbers in the AM’s new stairwell.
The first phase of the Australian Museum redevelopment, titled Project Discover, was designed by Australian architectural practices Neeson Murcutt + Neille and COX Architecture.
