The new Brenda-Milner School accommodates students aged 4 to 21, mainly with autism spectrum disorders, whether or not associated with motor impairment.
The organization of functions in the school is simply arranged around a central service center: the gymnasium and related services are surrounded by traffic. The classroom wings, administrative wings and other teaching or therapy rooms are located on the side wings of the building. This circulation pattern allows for shortcuts in movement or, on the contrary, circulation routes for walking or moving exercises. The building is designed so that it can be easily extended in cohabitation, simply by extending the class wings.
An exposed wooden structure is installed under the roof, accompanied by exposed wood decking. The school is 100% heated and air-conditioned thanks to 32 geothermal wells. All lighting is LED. The increased insulation, high-performance windows and glazing contribute to the excellent projected energy performance.
The location on the site was designed to allow for easy expansion of the building during its useful life. A continuous loading dock surrounds the building, making it easy to come and manage the entrances and exits. A wooded protection strip is maintained on the site.
