The Crossing is the newly opened signature restaurant within Charleston’s first luxury waterfront hotel, The Cooper. The design by Meyer Davis draws from the surrounding marshlands of the Cooper River and the area’s nautical history to create a destination reflective of its natural beauty.
Meyer Davis aimed to evoke a yacht-like, maritime sensibility throughout the restaurant. The dining room overlooks the mouth of the Cooper River, framed by teak millwork and custom drapery featuring a hand-painted map of the area by Lonesome Pictopia. At the chef’s table, the open kitchen brings an energetic flow that spills into the dining space, connecting guests to the experience and the craftsmanship behind each dish.
Honey Onyx slabs are woven throughout the millwork, with rich tones of caramel brown, gray-blue, and cream that ground the space in its natural context, reflecting the adjacent river and marshlands. The experience continues in the private dining room, where an immersive custom mural, also by Lonesome Pictopia, evokes the same landscape, adding depth and narrative to the space.
The outdoor terraces extend the dining experience beyond the interiors, inviting guests to take in expansive views of the Cooper River while dining al fresco. Reflecting the natural materials and refined finishes found inside, the terraces maintain a cohesive design language. Basket-weaving details inspired by Charleston’s traditional craftsmanship appear throughout, most notably in the bar dies and elevator lobby paneling, offering a subtle nod to the city’s heritage.
Throughout the restaurant, yacht-inspired luxury is balanced with Lowcountry tradition, creating spaces that feel both elevated and grounded in place. Drawing from Charleston’s maritime heritage, natural surroundings, and craftsmanship, Meyer Davis created an experience that feels immersive rather than imposed, inviting guests to slow down and connect with the waterfront setting. The design feels inseparable from its environment, with the river, local history, and a sense of movement woven into the experience, resulting in a space that feels timeless while remaining distinctly Charleston.
