Sun Life Workplace Wayfinding and Environmental Branding

By : ARIUM design

GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN 18th edition

Discipline : Communication & Branding

Categories : Environmental Design / Signage : Gold certification

In a post-pandemic world, Sun Life has reimagined its workplace to give in-person presence new meaning, transforming the office into a place of convergence, belonging, and inspiration. The pilot deployment of this new model is taking shape in Montreal, on Metcalfe Street, and aims to set the standard for all its offices worldwide.

More than just an arrangement, it is a global vision of the workplace that is emerging: an ecosystem where each zone, whether dedicated to concentration, collaboration, or relaxation, fits into distinct and flexible spaces. In this context, wayfinding becomes a strategic lever to guide, clarify places, and express Sun Life's identity.

We have developed a holistic strategy for the wayfinding system and architectural branding. It revolves around three main axes. First, directional signage integrated at spatial friction points such as corners, columns, and intersections. Then, a series of identity walls with high artistic value. Finally, a coherent visual language, enriched with customized pictograms, a differentiated color palette, and a typography carefully adjusted to the brand's universe.

The signage stands out for its refined volumes and elegant treatment. The arrows, placed outside the structures, embody the boldness of a company that doesn't hesitate to step outside the box. Usage-oriented maps guide users through the space, enhanced by readable key plans and intuitive nomenclature with QR codes to provide information in various languages. In addition, information hubs help better understand the nature of each zone. They provide indications about noise, activity types, and concentration levels in an inclusive approach. Some stations will also integrate sensory maps evoking sound, smell, or light for a more immersive and accessible reading.

Complementing this wayfinding strategy, twelve signature walls punctuate paths at key locations. True brand imprints in the space, they are the result of experiential design work where Sun Life's identity unfolds in strong visual gestures. Like the brand, games of shadows and light, three-dimensional compositions, or typographies carried by inspiring messages, each wall is unique. They were designed from a mix of innovative techniques and a rigorous structure of manufacturing and assembly, with a desire to create identity, immersive, and singular pieces.

This project embodies a new perspective on work environments. It is no longer just about guiding, but about accompanying, inspiring, and carrying the company's culture through living and sensitive signage.
