Context
Located in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, within the MRC of L’Islet, in Chaudière-Appalaches, Rousseau Métal was founded in 1950 with a small team of only 5 employees. From its inception, the Quebec company specialized in the manufacturing of high-quality metal products, developing over the years a solid reputation in its field. Today, Rousseau Métal employs approximately 350 people and remains, more than ever, a key player in the metallurgical industry in Quebec.
In order to meet its growing needs and keep up with its production capacity, the company has appointed Atelier Guy Architects to design and carry out the expansion of its head office. This expansion project aims to improve operational efficiency, modernize facilities, and provide high-quality living spaces for employees. Particular attention has been paid to optimizing the ergonomics of the premises and integrating sustainable architecture.
Atelier Guy Architects, known for their expertise in designing industrial spaces, thus undertook to create an environment that is both functional and innovative, combining state-of-the-art technology with respect for local identity. The expansion of the Rousseau Métal factory will not only support its continuous growth but also reinforce its position as a leader in its sector.
Concept
A leader in the design and manufacture of storage products, Rousseau Métal stands out not only for its meteoric growth but also for its values deeply rooted in the human dimension. Since its founding, the company has always paid particular attention to the importance of employee well-being and the creation of a stimulating and harmonious work environment. This approach is fully reflected in the expansion project of its facilities.
In addition to the new technical infrastructures added to the existing loading dock and sheet metal workshop, this project was designed with a desire to merge industrial performance and quality of life at work. The expansion includes new common spaces designed to encourage conviviality, sharing, and collaboration among teams. A large modern kitchen, designed to foster informal exchanges, has been set up at the heart of this new development. Nearby, a bright and spacious cafeteria allows employees to take their meals in a pleasant and relaxed setting.
The central element of this project is based on the creation of optimized rest and work areas. On two levels, these spaces are bathed in natural light thanks to large windows offering views of the green outdoor spaces, thus providing direct contact with nature. Additionally, relaxation areas have been integrated to promote relaxation and conviviality, contributing to the balance between professional performance and personal well-being while creating a soothing atmosphere conducive to creativity and productivity.
This architectural project is not limited to a simple extension of the plant, but it symbolizes a bold vision where industrial innovation and quality of life at work go hand in hand. By combining efficiency, aesthetics, and respect for human values, Rousseau Métal continues to affirm its role as a leader in its field while placing particular emphasis on the satisfaction and development of its team members.
Layout
After undergoing several expansions over the years, the new building is part of a sobriety and modernity approach, with clean lines that respect and extend the spirit of the existing building. The facade is marked by a large elegant marquee, supported by circular steel columns, creating an orderly rhythm that energizes the entrance while establishing a visual continuity between the old and the new. The hybrid structure, composed of openwork steel columns and beams, associated with an exposed wood decking, gives the building a lightness and warmth that extend inside, offering harmony and modernity while respecting the building's identity.
In addition to technical installations integrated into the sheet metal workshop, this expansion project has created new common spaces designed to promote employee well-being: a large friendly kitchen, a modern cafeteria, as well as rest and work areas spread over two levels bathed in natural light and surrounded by vegetation. These spaces have been designed to offer a soothing atmosphere, conducive to relaxation and conviviality, while promoting smooth circulation and harmonious interaction among different users.
The heart of the project is organized around a central block where the service kitchen is located, carefully arranged with wood veneer surfaces that create an environment that is both warm and functional. Circulations revolve around this central block, highlighting the fluid and intuitive aspect of the layout. The central volume unfolds into several distinct service islands, composed of solid wood and stainless steel, marrying elegance and durability while optimizing space efficiency.
The architectural staircase, perfectly in line with the entire project, integrates as a standalone sculpture, while curved glass walls act as guardrails, ensuring visual lightness.
Architectural Staircase
The architectural staircase was designed with great attention to technical and aesthetic details. Its structure relies on thick glass lamination, whose central film allows for the curvature of the whole while ensuring the necessary solidity. To ensure the system's resistance, structural elements have been integrated into the glass, maintaining the integrity of the staircase without compromising its elegant and transparent appearance. Each component was meticulously scanned using 3D point cloud technology to ensure millimeter precision in the assembly, particularly between the shoes and the glass sections. This process ensured a perfect fit for each piece and a flawless installation.
The steel used for the structure was bent with great precision, then polished and painted to achieve a smooth and impeccable finish. The goal was to achieve the most minimalist rendering possible, with no visible traces of welds or bolts, which enhances the stair's clean aspect. As for the steps, they are composed of steel purlins supporting mini polished concrete slabs, creating an elegant contrast between the strength of steel and the softness of concrete while ensuring excellent durability. The entire staircase thus becomes a centerpiece, both functional and aesthetic, that integrates harmoniously into the space while highlighting the contemporary design of the place.
Conclusion
This expansion project of the head office of Rousseau Métal embodies an innovative vision where industrial efficiency and employee well-being meet through functional, elegant, and human industrial architecture. Through this project, the Port-Jolienne company thus affirms its commitment to the well-being of its team and its clientele.
This building embodies a model of growth, reliability, and flexibility, anchored in environmental respect. The architecture of the building, combining modernity and respect for local identity, creates an optimized and human work environment, in which ergonomics and sustainability play a central role. The integration of friendly spaces such as the kitchen and the cafeteria, as well as the creation of rest areas bathed in natural light, allows the team to provide a framework conducive to collaboration, relaxation, and personal development.
This project undeniably demonstrates Rousseau Métal's continuous commitment to promoting performance while valuing the well-being of its employees, thereby consolidating its leadership in the Quebec metallurgical industry.
