Minsect

By : Christophe Paré

GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN 18th edition

Discipline : Student

Categories : Students work / Student - Industrial Design / Product / Furniture : Bronze certification

Created during the summer of 2024, Minsect is an experimental eyewear collection designed by a student aiming to rethink the relationship between humans and the living world. This series of five pairs draws inspiration equally from the realms of sport and speed as from the intricate morphology of insects. It juxtaposes elements of human performance with the functional beauty of natural structures, exploring an aesthetic at the intersection of science fiction and punk.

The project offers a critical reflection on the decline of our interactions with the animal kingdom, while highlighting the importance of nature-inspired design. Each frame becomes an object of observation, a visual manifesto where technical detail evokes both anatomy and engineering. On a personal level, the collection encapsulates the designer’s feeling of disconnection from nature, shaped by his experience living in both Montreal and Paris.

Minsect also stands out for its responsible approach to production: 60% of the materials come from repurposed objects, 25% from deadstock, and only 15% consist of newly sourced materials. This distribution reflects a clear commitment to sustainable practice, without sacrificing either formal precision or material innovation.

Far from conforming to traditional norms of accessories, the collection reimagines eyewear as conceptual objects situated between visual instrument and wearable artwork. All pairs deliberately break away from conventional eyewear design: lacking traditional side arms, they integrate unconventional attachment systems. The design aims to be both functional and evocative, sparking conversation about our relationship with otherness.
