Meng Du Hui Restaurant (Beijing Branch)

By : Tanzo Space Design

GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN 18th edition

Discipline : Interior Design

Categories : Accommodation, Restaurant & Bar / Restaurant > 1,600 sq.ft. (> 500 sq. m.) : Gold certification

Meng Du Hui, a new embodiment of Huizhou cuisine and culture, offers a unique journey into the heart of Anhui's mountainous landscapes and the cosmopolitan rhythm of Beijing. Located in the Wanshou Hotel, this restaurant is a seamless fusion of tradition and modernity, where the essence of Huizhou’s culinary heritage meets a fresh architectural perspective. Designed by TANZO Space, the space reinterprets Huizhou courtyards with a contemporary vision, creating a poetic, tranquil dining experience.

At the core of Meng Du Hui’s design is the pursuit of harmony—an intersection of past and present, nature and city, where traditional craftsmanship and modern aesthetics coexist. Inspired by the peaceful courtyards of Huizhou, the design evokes the region’s distinctive architectural elements, including black-tiled roofs, whitewashed walls, and the iconic bamboo groves. These elements are reimagined through innovative use of space, light, and materials, allowing the space to breathe and evolve. The restaurant’s design feels like a living entity, constantly shifting with the time of day, reflecting the changing light and the rhythms of nature.

The journey begins even before entering the restaurant, as the building is partially hidden by lush greenery. A circular opening in the screen wall invites guests to glimpse the interior, while reflective mirrors play with light, creating an alluring space that blurs the line between reality and fantasy. Inside, the design flows naturally, with water features, irregular columns, and pavilions layered harmoniously with the surrounding bamboo groves. The treatment of space invites a feeling of openness while preserving intimate, secluded moments for dining.

The design also pays homage to the Huizhou tradition of time-honored craftsmanship, with materials like wood, stone, and lacquer used to create a tactile experience. Latticed windows and curved walls define the restaurant’s various functional areas, while a minimalist color palette enhances the timeless beauty of the surroundings. The carefully curated details—such as the bamboo garden and the reflective surfaces—are a testament to the delicate balance between simplicity and complexity, nature and architecture.

Meng Du Hui’s design transcends traditional boundaries, offering a serene, immersive environment that fosters a deep connection to both the past and the present. It is a space that not only celebrates the flavors of Huizhou cuisine but also transports guests to a world where time flows at its own pace, inviting contemplation and discovery. This design is a true reflection of Huizhou’s enduring spirit, reimagined for a modern audience, making it a memorable destination for all who seek both culinary excellence and a unique sensory experience.
