GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN 18th edition
Discipline : Architecture
Categories : Other categories in architecture / Infrastructure : Grand Winner
The Marion St. Bridge is a pivotal pedestrian connection over Alaskan Way in Seattle, WA, representing a significant achievement in urban design and community facilitation. Designed by Rosales +, the bridge replaces an outdated and inaccessible pedestrian bridge, enhancing connectivity and aesthetic value. This project was a collaborative effort involving Rosales + as the bridge designer and architect, HDR as the Engineer of Record, and Flatiron as the contractor. Together, they transformed a critical urban space into an inviting and functional public amenity. The bridge connects the Colman Dock Ferry Terminal to downtown Seattle, facilitating over 5 million pedestrian crossings annually, making it one of the busiest pedestrian bridges on the West Coast.
The project was part of the Waterfront Seattle Program, aimed at revitalizing the area along Elliott Bay. The design process emphasized safety, accessibility, and user experience, ensuring compliance with ADA standards while providing ample width for heavy pedestrian traffic. Its graceful design features an arched center span with cantilevered end spans and well-proportioned angular V-shaped piers, contributing to the overall aesthetic of the city's skyline.
Constructed in a high-seismic region, the bridge integrates advanced engineering techniques. The foundation placement and type were strategically chosen to account for unique soil interactions and construction tolerances. The design incorporates drilled shafts and cantilevers, allowing independent construction from the ferry terminal and providing flexibility during the build. The bridge's superstructure consists of three spans made of post-tensioned concrete, with two edge beams connected by a reinforced deck slab. The innovative design utilizes tapered piers and varying edge beam depths to enhance visual quality while integrating practical construction methods. The materials used were selected for durability due to the bridge's proximity to seawater and the application of deicing salts. Featuring customizable lighting, the Marion St. Bridge transforms the waterfront experience at night and has become a symbol of Seattle's architectural renewal. It aligns with future urban planning goals, including sustainable design practices and community-focused initiatives.
Since its completion in 2023, the bridge has not only improved pedestrian access but has also contributed significantly to the identity of the waterfront. The design harmonizes with the surrounding environment and is complemented by adjacent developments, making it a central feature of the urban landscape.
This project faced various challenges, including avoiding existing utilities and managing unique soil conditions. The successful execution involved innovative solutions like cantilevered wings, which improved construction efficiency and minimized disruption. The bridge also includes ergonomically designed pedestrian railings and integrated lighting, providing both safety and visual appeal. In summary, the Marion St. Bridge stands as a remarkable example of combining functional pedestrian infrastructure with aesthetic and environmental considerations. It enhances the connectivity of Seattle’s urban fabric while celebrating the city’s waterfront, making it a source of pride for the community and a model for future urban projects.
