Metropolis by Marcus Samuelsson

GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 17e édition

Discipline : Design d’intérieur

Catégories : Hébergement, restaurant & bar / Restaurant > 1 600 pi2 (> 500 m2) : Certification Argent

The welcoming restaurant, helmed by renowned Chef Marcus  Samuelsson, is intentionally woven throughout the lobby experience.

Though not formally delineated, Metropolis runs  perpendicular in plan to the elevator circulation that directs  guests to the performance halls; the intermingling of the spaces is intentional, creating buzz and energy.

The built-in stage in the southern end of the lobby offers an area for drinks and small bites, with tiered seating for optimal sightlines and two custom, modular burgundy sofas that frame the space in the rear and shield from the central pathway. When not in performance mode, additional lounge seats can be added to the stage. A custom walnut service bar cart and a host stand have the same oil-rubbed antique brass mesh and blackened steel detailing as the main restaurant’s service stations. The cart’s zinc bar top calls to the main zinc bar and the ticket desk at PAC’s entry.

Vintage area rugs add warmth and softness, and delineate dining areas. Furniture was carefully chosen and designed to ensure comfort for both lounge and dining settings. Ensuring flexibility, it can be easily moved for event space rentals. In black stained wood or walnut, with neutral upholstery, the furniture features pops of burgundy that recall the performance hall seating. The lounge area also includes some chairs from David Rockwell’s Valet collection for Stellar Works.

The bar is open to the kitchen beyond through a lower    pass-through window and metal mesh. The zinc bartop features a blue-gray leather wraparound on the front nose; the bar die is clad in ceramic tiles with a gray-blue metallic glaze. The thin, horizontal tiles are randomly assorted in a rhythmic pattern.

Views are oriented to the glazed north wall and outdoor terrace and bar beyond (featuring a collection of Paola Lenti outdoor furnishings, including David Rockwell’s Elba seating). A communal table that faces the terrace has integrated power for a variety of uses.

Guests are guided through the bright, stainless steel kitchen to a hidden, speakeasy-like private dining room. The intimate environment for a maximum of 16 guests feels like a warm, welcoming wine cellar, with pencil ledge wainscoting and built-in millwork for service and cabinet space. Open shelving displays wine bottles. David Rockwell’s Porto Lino wallcovering for Maya Romanoff surrounds the custom 14’ walnut dining table with rhythmic bands of cork and metallic foil. A vintage patchwork rug, similar to those found in the lobby and lounge, covers the buffed concrete floor. The linear chandelier above the dining table features round luminaires nestled into solid wood, mimicking a newly budded tree branch. Cast glass flush-mounted sconces with domed, circular diffusers cast a soft, atmospheric light.
