Both urban signals and sculptural furniture, Les voyants are ephemeral installations distributed in three variations in the borough of Outremont in Montreal.
Approach
Comfort and use are linked to symbolic, poetic and signage intentions to reinforce the spirit of the place. A seasonal layer is added to these squares already frequented by residents.
Three sites
Integration is a dynamic of interaction with what is on site: the paths, the urban furniture, the visual clearances, the sunlight, the landscaping, the occupants, the materiality and the colors.
Parc Raoul-Dandurand – Voyant ces voyants! evokes the vegetal context of the site and resurrects in flames the water games of the summer.
Place Kate-McGarrigle – Voyants à voyants is attached to the granite blocks of the landscaping to form windproof shells and lampshades. Nearby clothing stores suggest that perhaps fabrics are used to wrap passersby.
Place Marcelle-Ferron – Voyants pour les voyants blends in with the green of the conifers, fence, benches and street lamps nearby and enlivens the site in the winter space.
Materiality
Soft materials have particular sculptural and structural qualities. EVA foam sheets stood out for their ability to provide comfort and evoke the poetics of winter, being insulating and flexible. There is a balance between the right thickness of the sheets and the position of the contact points to achieve acceptable flexibility and sufficient tension for adequate stiffness.
