Uptown Brampton Transit-Oriented Community “TOC”
As a fastest-growing, diverse, large household size, and largely immigrant and young population with entrepreneur skills, Brampton has: adopted a "Vision 2040" to guide large shifts from car-dependence to a transit-oriented city structure; positioned Uptown Brampton as the “new urban transit-oriented gateway,” and developed a culture of "a City By-design" with City Hall-led design excellence to integrate public interest through co-design with developers and community, to serve as a foundation for decisions for change.
The arrival of Light Rail Transit in 2024 triggered 13 million square feet of developments in Uptown Brampton. Urban Design has developed an interlocking, three-scales design-based framework to enable cross-sector collaborations and concurrent implementation. Core strategies include:
HOLISTIC HEALTH Create a network of interconnected “20-min walkable, healthy, family-oriented, mixed-use neighbourhoods” with facilities co-locate in “Urban Community Hubs” as beating heart to enable active healthy lifestyles and social resiliency.
CLIMATE CHANGE Connect “creek to creek” with a network of “urban greenways” and “20-min cycling necklaces” to revive regional ecology and to reach carbon-neutral goal.
ECONOMIC COMPETITIVENESS Shift the workforce towards a “tech-focused & innovative” economy through improving access to arts & culture, technology & entrepreneurship, urban agriculture & lifelong learning.
