The Myhal Centre for Engineering Innovation and Entrepreneurship (Myhal) occupies the last unbuilt site on University of Toronto’s the main campus thoroughfare. While the building’s simple form and elegant, restrained expression respond to its privileged place amongst major heritage landmarks, the cutting-edge infrastructure within heralds a new era in engineering education. Myhal includes in its composition a 468-seat interactive lecture theatre, state-of-the-art collaborative classrooms, makerspaces and light fabrication facilities as well as several multidisciplinary research centers and institutes. It balances these 6,500 m2 of assigned program space with an additional 6,500 m2 of casual learning space. Program spaces are flexible to respond to changing technology and methods of instruction. Casual learning spaces are designed to encourage spontaneous interaction between peers. Collectively, they work to break down barriers between disciplines, facilitate collaboration, encourage active learning, and accelerate innovation. The attention to detail, rich material quality, abundance of daylight, and curated views further enrich the occupant experience. Myhal targets a useful services life of 100 years premised on the durability of materials and assemblies, the flexibility of structure and systems and a high performance, bio-climactic envelope that supports passive lighting and ventilation. It opens as one of the three most energy-efficient academic buildings in Canada.
