Nestled between the Potomac River and National Mall, this local gem has been reimagined as a new retail precinct only 1/4 mile from the Jefferson Memorial. Established in 1805, the Washington Fish Market is the oldest continually operating fish market in the U.S. with iterations of historic improvements including a "new" Municipal Market complex with a large Market Hall for fish vendors opened in 1916. These vendors were relocated in 1960, a result of the Federal Highway Transportation Act which inserted a new highway exit ramp in the heart of the site. The majority the 1916 structures were razed and the current Municipal Piers were built underneath the ramp, serving a set of floating vendor barges installed to replace the Market Hall. Today, only the Historic Lunch Room and Oyster Shed remain from that Market's heyday in the 1920's, standing as "Land-Side" anchors for the barges. The site now includes 5 new structures as well as the renovation of the Lunch Room and Oyster Shed, and features site upgrades that provide a variety of interconnected urban gathering spaces. The now-completed $25M project includes new retail and service buildings which boast some of the city’s most existing new restaurants and nightlife.
