Built in 1970, this 11 story, post-modernist building in downtown Ottawa had been sitting vacant for years. This gem boasts iconic precast concrete panels that give the exterior “skin” a unique character. A prime sustainable gesture; converting an empty, existing building into something useful. This massive undertaking provides 158 much-needed housing units while also bringing life back to downtown. By reusing the existing concrete structure and preserving the existing precast concrete panels, a total of 4575 tonnes of embodied carbon was avoided; a practical and effective solution for reducing embodied carbon and building a more sustainable future. A 2-storey lobby, incredible amenity spaces for tenants and proximity to sustainable transportation options, The Slayte situates itself successfully addressing many pressing issues of our time, in an elegant manner.
