Built on contaminated swamplands in Taiyuan’s downtown, Heping Park is an extensive landscape providing diverse, pleasant, and engaging communal outdoor spaces for the city thus instilling a sense of community, identity, and belonging.
The sheer scale of this 29Ha eco-park was made to human scale by structuring and modulating the terrain via a cost-effective exercise of cut-and-fill. Submerged grounds were excavated to create a central lake, and hills were formed to create thematic sub-spaces adding interest, discovery, and multiple vantage points and lookouts. Heping Park also addresses sustainable concepts of water management and resilience (sponge-city) – Lake, educational wetlands, streams, bioswales, rain gardens, and drainage strategies are tools used to optimize water management concepts as they absorb, retain, and filter rainwater during heaving rains and flood seasons, and release and reuse it during dry seasons. A 2km jogging trail meanders through the urban forest and other thematic areas, sports courts, climbing walls and playgrounds complement physical activities the park offers. Pavilions, pergolas, observation towers, bridges, and decks are spread throughout the park giving it a contemporary touch, while still being connected to its culture/context. Native planting design offer visitors a rich array of sceneries, such as mountainous forests, woodlands, lakefronts, wetlands, and shade gardens, all of which were carefully designed to look stunning all year long.
