Discipline : Urban Design, Landscape Architecture & Landscaping
Categories : Concept / concept in landscape and/or urban development : Platinum Winner
Winner of the International Competition for the Vision of Downtown Sudbury in 2050, Project Sève explores a range of ideas and possibilities in the fields of architecture, urban design, landscape, and social sciences. Serving as a guideline, the vision encompasses a territory rich in industrial and landscape heritage characterized by its northern nature and its cultural diversity. As part of the existing development projects under construction, Sève relies on three actions to make downtown Sudbury 2050 an innovative, unique, vibrant and evolving ecosystem: reveal, regenerate and unite. This 30-year planning project was holistically conceived, as it was dictated by urban planners and supported by citizens' committees. This will allow downtown Sudbury to become a model of urban regeneration due to: urban agriculture; sustainable environmental principles of water conservation and nature protection; energy-independent buildings; ecosystems in harmony with nature; a city that encourages active transport; responsibly sourced materials supporting the local economy; inclusive living environments; reduction of noise pollution and stress through pedestrianization. In the long term, the vision of downtown Sudbury is unique, because it reflects anchoring in a territory attached to its northern identity, bubbling with unifying projects, built and thought out as a community.
