Set on the banks of the St. Lawrence and flanked by the Molson brewery and the historic Héritage du Vieux Port building, SAX is an integral part of the eastward expansion of the Port area of the city. Drawing equal inspiration from the industrial style of neighbouring construction and the more classical style of Old Montréal, the building showcases prefabricated white concrete panels and Saint-Marc limestone.
The design process sought to integrate the heritage context and to enhance the nearby landscape, formulating a proposal that is at once coherent and in dialogue with the varied surroundings. The geometry of the facade is very simple, combining contemporary lines with a classic tripartite composition of base, body and capital. The distribution of large bay windows and private loggias provides the apartments with a framing found nowhere else in the city.
Access to the units is spacious and lit by abundant natural light. The simplicity of fittings, the quality of materials in their “raw” state—primarily concrete and wood—and attention to detail contribute to the enhancement and longevity of the indoor and outdoor common areas. Two roof gardens equipped with furniture, a swimming pool and sports equipment face the river on the first floor, and the city on the second floor.
