Answer the call to save lives
The CAE Air1 ventilator is designed for use on adult patients with respiratory insufficiency or failure. Usable by healthcare professionals, its operation is easy, with a focus on a clear and unambiguous user interface. Its style is simple, clean, and contemporary. It subtly blends in with the hospital environment already overloaded with all kinds of medical equipment and devices.
Responding to a challenge launched by a university to design a Canadian artificial ventilator for patients with COVID-19, a team of engineers at CAE started from scratch and created a first rough trial prototype in the early days of the pandemic. Winning the challenge, CAE was awarded the Government of Canada contract to manufacture 10,000 units to be delivered in record time.
The design started at high speed, war room style. In this race against time, the manufacturing deadlines and the availability of supplies in time defined the manufacturing processes, the materials chosen, as well as influenced the selection of existing components. All the stakeholders involved in the project were available at all times, which helped Brio to deliver impeccable ergonomics, right the first-time parts and complete 3D modeling, meeting all Health Canada certification requirements.
