Lanterne architectes and Atelier Filz joined forces to convert a century-old duplex in the Limoilou district into a single-family residence. Stripped of an outdated drum and attached garage in the backyard, the property is entirely redesigned within its existing perimeter, without expansion.
The entire facade was rebuilt in the spirit of the Limoilou neighborhood, featuring clay brick and white sash openings identifying with the area. Preservation of the existing tree guided the configuration of the entrance stoop, which joins up with an existing paved access sidewalk, avoiding any reworking of the ground near the tree’s root system. A delicate canopy tops the front door, supported by ornamental iron brackets. The original cornice has been completely restored and covered in a cream color that highlights its molding and reveals all its fine details. The front balcony is encircled by a double-railed railing that echoes the traditional cut-out skate railings of the Limoilou district. At the rear of the residence, a generous double-height fenestration allows diffuse light from the north.
To create privacy from the street, a large entrance and office space occupy the front of the house, allowing the living spaces to be positioned towards the rear courtyard. The kitchen is bathed in natural light and overlooked by an arched ceiling opening that adds softness and character to the rectilinear volume. Further on, the dining room and living room are adjacent to the courtyard, thanks to large windows that offer an attractive glimpse of the alley. The staircase, light and airy, leads to a wide landing that takes its place at the heart of the floor’s various rest areas, then leads to the roof, where a terrace will be laid out in a subsequent phase of the project.
.
The materiality developed for the project takes up a natural palette that relies on white oak, combined with different shades of grey and warm beige. Minimalist lighting highlights the space itself. The clients’ sober furnishings are in keeping with the spirit of the place, contributing to the minimalist character of the project.
