Behind the traditional facade of this former model house of the Cité-Jardin development in Montreal, a contemporary house has been completely remodelled and enlarged in order to open up the living space as much as possible and create a strong link with the outside environment on all its floors.
A gradation of space, from public to private, is established on the first floor. A floor and ceiling intervention along the front façade marks the main entrance and the more formal rooms located on either side of it: an office and a living room. The latter has retained its original sunken floor to create a defined and welcoming zone within the open area, with its fireplace and bar.
The architectural staircase has been brought to the forefront, and brings verticality to this home that does not have particularly high ceilings. The generous stairwell creates a volume at the heart of the space, around which the different zones are fluidly organized. It leans against a mass in counterweight, which hides the kitchen at the back. The latter is completely detached from the exterior walls, and benefits from a maximum opening onto the courtyard.
Upstairs, the landing is uncluttered and opens to a terrace. Similarly, the family room in the basement benefits from abundant natural light via an English courtyard. Built-in furniture judiciously distributed throughout the house frames and defines the rooms according to their functions.
