In a community such as an elderly nursing home, how can architecture contribute to depicting life taking place in between its walls without giving the residents a permanent impression of being observed?
The nursing home is a peculiar microcosm: a little calmer and somehow apart from the outside world. However, life is brought within it by the residents themselves, following their own rhythm. In fact, a subdivision of the program creates a “surrounding wall” around the site with a public core. There, we can admire the action that brightens up the place without establishing an unhealthy observation pattern from private to public spaces.
Moreover, the people who leave their home to go live in a nursing home have to give up a part of their privacy, because they end up living with people they did not choose. This project tries to make this transition happen in the most gentle way by letting the residents choose the level of social interactions they want to have. On the other hand, living within a community can prevent people from ever feeling lonely if the communal spaces are sufficiently lively. Sights offers a few different space configurations to allow multiple levels of social interactions so that the introverted elders, as well as the extroverted ones, can enjoy their stay.
