Based on a sequential analysis of sections of rue Principale, BC2 carried out a comprehensive assessment. The objective was to identify the potentials and constraints, as well as intersections and layouts that were problematic for the various users (pedestrians, cyclists and drivers).
From these broad findings, BC2 then proposed a development vision to unify the public and private domains, reconfigure the road geometry, improve user comfort by encouraging active transportation through the installation of a bike path, and highlight the major structural elements along rue Principale. This redevelopment focused mainly on consolidating 4 large public spaces, offering green oases along a route for pedestrians. A zoo theme was incorporated into five “signature zones”, placed at several of the intersections along rue Principale. The specific characteristics of various coats and pelts of animals at the Zoo were exploited in the form of pixels transferred onto the paving. The proposed installations formed an Ariane’s thread, linking the various reference points along the street through the downtown core. Several focus groups comprising representatives from the main municipal departments and Granby residents helped rally all the stakeholders around the same vision.
