Place de Paris is strategically location in a historic area of Quebec City and protected by UNESCO. This public space represents one of the important gateways to Old Quebec.
Many challenges and opportunities to highlight the “site's past” were considered in order to design the redesign of Place de Paris. Located on the site of the former Finlay Market, archaeological excavations have made it possible to uncover the foundations of the vast market hall. Thus, the design concept represents the history of the public market by creating an open, attractive and versatile space that can welcome several types of activities and gatherings.
The project includes the complete reconfiguration of the site. Place de Paris consists of a large, paved area with a ground pattern reminding the former location of the river. It integrates street furniture, giving the space a festive atmosphere of Parisian terraces. There is also a green space, lighting, and various elements of historical interpretation.
Thus, the City of Quebec is restoring its letters of nobility to this important urban space, which also serves as a bridge between Place des Canotiers and Place-Royale. Place de Paris retains its vocation as a gathering place, showcasing the architecture of Petit Champlain while offering facilities that meet the needs of residents, visitors and tourists passing through the site.
