Arising from a participative method and thanks to a unique partnership between the University of Montreal and the City of Montreal, the Place Alice-Girard project stands out through the creation of a central public place bringing life to the development of the new MIL Montreal District. Named after the institution’s first female dean, the square is an important meeting place for workers, students and visitors. The project marks the identity of the site, rooted in the memory of an industrial landscape characterized by a large diagonal, which is a reflection of the old vocation of the old marshalling yard location of the site. The place reflecting the scientific vocation of the new district is exemplary, using the best practices in terms of planning, construction and sustainable management. It is part of and thus contributes to the ecological corridor of Canadian Pacific railways throughout the city. Metaphorically, the rails for transporting materials are used to transport water that is directed to lush green rain gardens. A monumental mist fountain, echoing the old locomotive rotunda, which can also be used as a stage during events, adorns the center balancing with the public art piece 29 • 53, by Patrick Bernatchez. This real interactive jewel in the heart of the square lights up at night to shine over the whole place.
