This project was conceived during a studio course aiming to develop a concert hall adjacent to the Faculty of Music of the University of Montreal, located on the mountain side of Mount Royal. The conceptual approach had to consider the delicate proximity between the hall and the landscape, as well as the numerous issues related to the important height differential between the site and the streets. Special care was given to creating an architectural language that would blend well with the existing faculty.
This proposal was born from a sensitive consideration of the site as if a controlled landslide of rocks from the mountain had occurred. It shapes the concert hall as a series of monolithic volumes linked together by passages and footbridges that serve as transition ways as well as observation points. The intervention is conceived to create a link between the music faculty and the city. That link is visible from the subway station where a pedestrian boardwalk guides the users toward the mountain. Indoor and outdoor public spaces are adapted to upgrade the quality of student life and reinforce the community feeling. The volumes are organized to create a slow ascension of Mount Royal that allows the users to walk on a path where they can enjoy multiple views of the natural and urban landscape, making it a rich experience.
