The Nantong pavilion graces the port city of Nantong, embracing the estuary of the Yangtze River.
As the heart of a new residential quarter, the pavilion and encompassing gardens provide a community space for the 7.3 million inhabitants of the surrounding urban community.
The pavilion and its gardens welcomes residents to enjoy with family and friends. It is a beautiful place to commemorate family events, celebrate children’s parties and momentous weddings.
A primary objective was to create an uplifting design that would contrast with the regularity and monotony of neighbouring residential towers.
Inspiration was also drawn from the historical importance of the Yangtze River, and the beauty of the geese that live in the area. The overall shape and general massing of the community centre is reminiscent of the extended wings of a goose as it takes flight. The water basins adjacent to this building reinforce this theme and provide the feeling that the building is rising from the water.
The sinuous approach of the landscape towards the pavilion generates a multitude of dynamic angles. The irregular geometry of the building and the reflection in the surrounding water basins culminates in an experience of flight and transformation. The building and it’s environment symbolizes the growth of families and the community.
