On the site of a former mechanic’s garage, attentive to the neighborhood life and to the needs of its occupants, NMBHD is a 90-square-meter-footprint multiple dwelling centered on the idea of a childhood home. It includes a family home and its artisanal ceramic studio, as well as two rental units. Corresponding to the intimacy and conviviality requirements of a small family, the composition reshapes the typology of the Montreal triplex with compact domestic spaces offering functional flexibility. The composition, with golden cruciform windows evoking a child's drawing, strategically positioned on the front and side façades while generous on the rear façade, is complemented by numerous skylights that maximize the supply of natural light. Large glass partitions delimit the enclosure of the staircase, with several openings and a skylight, contributing both to the light and to spatial perception. The building is complemented by exteriors dedicated to gardening: a vegetable patch, fruit trees, a beehive, and an urban henhouse. Favoring low energy consumption, the volume of white bricks, as well as the white membrane, reduce air conditioning requirements such as heat islands. Raw materials and mechanical elements, visible when regulations, acoustics, and maintenance permit, emphasize the simplicity of the methods and construction details.
