At the heart of my artistic exploration lies a fascination with materials and their ability to tell stories, evoke feelings and provoke reflection. The work “(D)o (N)ot (A)ppologized” embodies this quest for dialogue between matter, time and memory through the use of pigmented resin poured onto a faux-finished panel that imitates a rusted steel plate.
The work is a meditation on the duality between permanence and ephemerality, between nature and human intervention. Steel, a symbol of industrial strength and progress, is reimagined here in its most vulnerable form: that of decomposition under the effects of time and the elements. Rust, often perceived as a sign of decline or neglect, is reinterpreted as a living material, bearing the indelible marks of the passage of time, and testifying to the beauty inherent in transformation and decay.
The choice of pigmented resin, with its translucent qualities and ability to capture light, creates depths and nuances that defy the traditional perception of rust as mere corrosion. Each casting, each pigment selected, by contradiction seeks to capture the very essence of rust not as an end, but as a metamorphosis, inviting the observer to an introspection on the cycles of life, creative destruction and regeneration.
The faux-finish, meticulously crafted to imitate a rusty steel plate, serves as a backdrop to this reflection. It blurs the boundaries between reality and representation, authenticity and imitation, questioning our preconceptions about authenticity and the value we place on objects and materials based on their condition and origin.
“(D)o (N)ot (A)ppologized” is an invitation to contemplate beauty in imperfection, to recognize poetry in decay, and to reflect on our own relationship with time, alteration and our deepest identity, our DNA.
