Residential – Single-family conversion
Montreal, Qc
Nestled in the heart of Plateau Mont-Royal, Resther stands out as a gem of innovation and reflection on urban living. The original four units, whose facade retains the area’s history, were converted by a design team into two single-family homes to provide occupants with the space and light previously unattainable in the old layout.
The transformation project showcases a remarkable mastery of interior design and a deep consideration of space usage and fluidity. Each technical decision and chosen material tells a story of boldness and respect.
On the facade, the revitalization of the masonry pays homage to the architectural character of the neighborhood, enhanced by the black frames of the new windows. Contemporary forms also emerge subtly from the structure, including the replication of ornaments based on the client’s sketches, thus personalizing the project’s identity.
Upon entering, the project impresses with its command of light and openness of spaces, challenging the segmentation and darkness inherited from the site.
Walls that once divided the space have given way to airy circulation and immersive light.
The living spaces on the ground floor epitomize functionality and aesthetics. Indirect lighting, sometimes hidden or architecturally integrated, shapes the ambiance and sharpens the perception of spaces, mimicking natural light throughout the place. This area is also defined by its smart layout into distinct yet harmoniously connected zones, from the office area to the open kitchen.
The kitchen itself embodies this symbiosis. Dressed in St-Henry granite and burnt walnut finishes, it highlights the rugged elegance of the design.
This choice of materials introduces the visual language developed throughout the home: a play of contrasts, light and dark, mystery and airiness. The shades and textures engage organically without ever really clashing.
The bay windows, opening to the outdoor terrace and the new vegetable garden, blend space and light during the warmer months.
The solid oak staircase is a striking example of the fusion of form and function. Its discreetly elegant glass railing not only secures the ascent but also contributes to the visual lightness of the volumes. Innovation even hides under the steps, where storage space has been cleverly fitted for the owners’ feline companion.
Upstairs, the bedroom beckons with serenity and restfulness. Beside the bed, niches turned into bedside tables contribute to the ambiance’s clarity and purity. Ingeniously arranged, they hide outlets and switches, thus maintaining the space’s visual flow.
To connect to the outdoors, not one but two sliding doors stand as bulwarks against the Montreal cold, promising nights of absolute rest.
In the bathroom, the lack of windows did not deter the design team, who overcame constraints to provide occupants with the natural light they dreamed of. The construction of a skylight turns the space into a place open to the stars, for both the inhabitants and their plants enjoying their new ecosystem.
The openness of the space also translates through the floor and its rimless walk-in shower, just a seamless walk away from the immaculate free-standing white tub
The music studio, with walls reaching an STC of 60, finally allows the occupants to record their musical creations at any time. It thus illustrates the designers’ commitment to customizing spaces and considering the needs of their occupants.
The selection of local wood species for architectural finishes and cabinetry, Quebec granite, and the project’s focus on local actors underline the designers’ approach through their support and confidence in the regional economy.
Resther is the fruit of close collaboration between the owners, the design team, architects, general contractors, and a dedicated network of craftsmen. Together, they have not only reinvented a space but also created a place that tells a story of passion, innovation, and respect for the site’s history. It stands as a testament to what it means to think and live interior design today.
