The Biodome was originally built as a velodrome for the Montreal Olympics in 1976. In 1992, it was converted into a natural science museum. The Biodome is an integral part of Space for Life, a series of institutions that expose different facets of the natural sciences to the public. KANVA’s concept, winner of the international competition to revitalize the Biodome, proposes to rethink the relationship between man and nature and to re-examine the educational and cultural potential of a public institution.
The Biodome includes four ecosystems of the Americas: the Tropical rainforest, the Laurentian forest, the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Subpolar regions. Each environment is a microcosm of living organisms housing more than 4,500 animals, 250 different species and 500 plant species. The Biodome's overall revitalization strategy is to insert a continuous curved wall into a living organism that envelops each ecosystem like a skin. Pure in both form and color, the white skin isolates the ecosystems to allow for a better understanding of the site, contrasting the robust concrete architecture of the velodrome while becoming a neutral yet bold intermediary between two important elements: the building and the ecosystem. The living skin guides visitors along their journey and invites them to introspect before and between each visit of the ecosystems.
