GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 14th edition
Discipline : Urban Design, Landscape Architecture & Landscaping
Categories : Landscape Architecture / Public Space Landscape Architecture : Silver Certification
The public square, by virtue of its composition, its lighting and its materiality, is the main gathering place of the project. It acts as a gateway, harmonizing with the adjacent urban landscape. It is defined as a multifunctional space open to the street, structured and animated by the diversity and flexibility of interventions.
Through street furniture, textures and raw materials, distinct ground treatment as well as an appropriate choice of plants, the place is transformed into a safe and inviting place, a nod to the industrial heritage of the site and at Maison Radio-Canada.
Unobstructed and minimalist, the western portion is made up of wooden benches and paving stone inserts in continuity with the frame. In addition to creating a structuring visual effect from the outside towards the building, these elements make it possible to prioritize the space and invite passers-by to discover the place.
The brick inserts, like a spine, direct passers-by towards the center. The integration of steps, islands of greenery and grassy esplanade allows various experiences and the holding of gathering activities, which can accommodate crowds during events.
Through the simplicity and adaptability of the proposal, the square offers a clear central space which places the citizen at the heart and which transforms it into a space of meeting and gathering, of contemplation, as well as an event venue, accessible, functional at the according to the seasons.
