How to reconcile traditional inspiration and contemporary message? This was the challenge faced by the architects hired by Bishop’s College School to design a new kind of student residence.
The resulting building provides a warm, family-like environment for 36 teenagers from various countries around the world. Red brick of course was used for all façades as it echoes the campus’ heritage buildings, but the old stone ornaments were replaced by carefully designed concrete details. These, in a subtle way, symbolize the institution’s desire to adapt to a new era.
The V-shaped residence consists of two 18-room wings, on either side of a central lounge/dining/kitchen area for the use of the residents. At garden level, a multipurpose room and an exterior agora are accessible to all members of the community linked to this small century-old campus. The grounds were landscaped in such a way as to interfere as little as possible with the spectacular nature surrounding this 250-acre campus.
