L’espace entre nous is a socially engaged mural, a testament to the pandemic and its impact on our lives, but also, more broadly, to what keeps us connected to each other. We wanted to create a piece that would represent social distancing and the pandemic, but also transcend these subjects with a deep and abiding message.
This multi-disciplinary artwork is a beacon of resilience, solidarity and meaning. It was consciously placed in a densely populated, tight-knit neighbourhood, in a community rattled by months of lockdown and loss—of one another, of togetherness… The mural is intended to be a poetic and hopeful legacy for all Montrealers, one that strengthens solidarity, dialogue, well-being and pride among citizens.
This unique mural was made possible thanks to the 34th Grand Prix du Conseil des arts de Montréal grant received in 2019, but above all through the inspiration and vision of three women: writer and theater performer, Évelyne de la Chenelière, visual artist, Cyndie Belhumeur and MU’s general and artistic director, Elizabeth-Ann Doyle.
