Québec City boasts a wealth of exceptional riverfront it would like to protect and make accessible so residents can enjoy nature and take part in recreational activities. The city has therefore developed a design concept for a vast natural, inhabited park spanning 30 square kilometres. The park encompasses four major rivers in the region, plus biodiversity and active travel corridors between the rivers, nine activity hubs, eleven reception areas, seven signature city entrances, and various inhabited areas. These all combine to form Parc des Grandes-Rivières de Québec! Over the next 20 years, the park will be come to include public plazas, lookouts, walkways, 100 km of trails, beaches, boat launches, riverfront neighbourhoods, wildlife habitats, and cultural trails. The design concept is based on a huge collective undertaking called Reinventing Our Rivers, which included an international ideas competition, input form a committee of experts, and broad consultations with some 3,000 people. With it, landscape architects have re-envisioned the city as a place where rivers are the star performers in the urban landscape. They have struck a balance between preserving the natural environment and creating space where people can enjoy the riverfront and the water. A jewel of a project finely tailored to the city and its needs!
