GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 14th edition
Discipline : Architecture
Categories : Residential Building / Low-Rise Rental or Condominium Building (< 5 storey-high) : Platinum Winner
Located on de la Roche Street in the Plateau Mont-Royal neighbourhood, the Geode integrates itself into a vibrant area with an incomparable urban vitality. In view of its context, the project aims to give a new breath to this plot with a contemporary residential project of five units reflecting all the energy of this sector where young professionals mix with families and couples.
Inspired by a geode, a mineral/vegetal cohabitation is highlighted within a liberated courtyard space at the project’s center. The crystalline cladding on the facade propagates into this inner courtyard, reflecting light. In addition, a historical reflection is suggested by proposing a contemporary reinterpretation of contextual brick facades.
This project aims for high environmental standards by implementing the sorting and recycling of materials, the planting of trees and climbing plants, the installation of a white roof and planting bins and the use of energy-efficient materials and equipment.
Offering a diversity of typologies (one, two and three-bedroom dwellings) the design ensures a mix within the building itself but also the retention of families in the city, which is an important housing concern. The free space liberated by the new inner courtyard creates a vivacious, organic area that strengthens the bond between private and public spaces. The project’s innovation manifests itself not only in plan but with its sustainable materials and abundant integration of vegetation.
