Alexandra is the design project for a small space on the front facade of a Montreal plex. Wishing to circumscribe the strip of land in front of the house without enclosing it, MYTO designed a buffer space between the street and the residence that combines qualities of privacy, welcome and practicality. Intelligently occupying all available space, this project combines functional and aesthetic layouts where mineral and vegetation blend.
Since the clients wanted to mark a separation from the building next door without completely isolating themselves from it, the strategy was to build an openwork concrete wall, a privacy screen that lets in light and glances. In a single gesture, this concrete wall is extended and becomes the threshold of the house. The delicacy of Ductal concrete and its light color give an impression of floating, a weightless entrance.
.
Adjacent to the entrance, generous, sturdy furniture accommodates strollers and trash and recycling bins. Made of corrosion-resistant aluminum for four-season use, its color harmonizes with that of the façade’s bricks. With its lightweight slits and planted roof, the furniture blends beautifully into its surroundings.
Aside the storage units, a flower box becomes a planting space for perennials and grasses. In the evening, the opening on the front of the planter transforms into a luminous slit for ambient lighting.
At night, the front of the planter becomes a slit for ambient lighting.
A residential storefront design, the Alexandra project marries the utilitarian with the living, and integrated design with urban landscaping.
