GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 14th edition
Discipline : Architecture
Categories : Commercial Building / Hotel & Holiday Resort : Gold Certification
The steep mountain landscape of the Indian Himalayas, birthplace of the holy Ganges River, is a nature that supersedes all human construction.
It was this modesty in face of the grandiosity of the place that guided the development of Taj Rishikesh.
The resort includes restaurants, seventy-nine guestrooms, a spa, and a series of villas on a steeply sloping site overlooking the Ganges. The architecture is inspired by the neighbouring Himalayan villages that are typically organized around a Darbargadh, a traditional palace-fortress-temple.
The villas are set into a succession of curving terraces formed from hand-cut random-rubble stone walls. These layered settings allow for a harmonious integration into the site and provide private viewpoints for each guestroom.
Uniting the property and inspired by the serpentine nature of the Ganges River, the winding central pathway offers access to the various dwellings of the resort. This sinuous route successively connects the main building at the highest plateau; the villas and spa at the intermediate terraces; and finishes at the swimming pool overlooking the river.
The traditional Kath-Kuni architecture of the region integrates stone walls with vast cantilevered wooden beams. This vernacular style has been re-interpreted here, creating a meeting point between contemporary architecture and ancestral construction techniques.
This project is a tribute to the region’s culture and is an ongoing conversation between the old and the new.
