Hotel Le Germain Montreal underwent a complete renovation in 2019. The project consisted in the expansion of the existing building by adding 6 floors, the extension of the restaurant on the 2nd floor by the addition of a floating cantilevered glass cube on the facade. All the interior spaces, the lobby, the guest rooms and all the common areas were also renovated. Making it an unavoidable project in downtown Montreal.
Located on a busy street, this project involves major technical challenges in its design, execution and construction.
The constraints of the site, as well as those of the high-rise built with the Vierendeel beam technique, pushed the team to implement innovative ways to add new floors to this building. Thus, LEMAYMICHAUD worked with Upbrella to devise the addition of floors to the existing building using an innovative lifting system. A total of 35 rooms were added spread over 4 floors, including suites with private terraces. These floors were constructed of glass and steel for a harmonious integration with the existing building. The new glass overhang at the entrance acts as a subtle reminder as well as providing additional space for the second floor restaurant, but more importantly acting as a canopy and a strong visual signal at street level.
This project is inspired by its heritage. The exterior and interior architecture, supported by the interior design, aims at reviving the spirit of the 1967 World's Fair and the decade of the sixties.
