GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 14th edition

Discipline : Architecture

Categories : Public Building / Higher Education & Research Building : Gold Certification

Since September 2019, the Science Complex of the new MIL Campus of the Université de Montréal has hosted the Chemistry, Physics, Geography and Biological Sciences Departments. Located on the site of the former Outremont marshalling yard, this major science complex, aiming for LEED Gold level certification and totalling nearly 60,000 m², is a true social project. Indeed, by fostering the creation of networks within the university community and connecting it to the surrounding neighbourhoods, the project contributes to the revitalization of an entire sector of the city through the development of an innovative environment.

The Science Complex is composed of two hubs (Science and Education) articulated on either side of a north-south axis that crosses the site: the Blue Promenade. This thread connects the neighborhoods on either side of the railroad tracks, as well as green spaces, public places, and university buildings. Located under the Blue Promenade, the library unites the two hubs and unfolds on multiple levels along two large courtyards.

To unify this new urban campus with the main campus established on the northern flank of Mount Royal, the architects introduced elements of the mountain, which is intimately linked to the image and history of UdeM. Thus, nature is concretely invited into the project through the gardens composed of species found on Mount Royal, but also through the relief shaped by the buildings and the pedestrian link.
