GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 14th edition
Discipline : Industrial Design & Product Design
Categories : Product Design in Small Series & Custom-Made / Residential, Commercial & Built-In Furniture
The industrial rocking chair project is a concept imagined by Berthier Dubé, a woodworking teacher. As part of the programme, he sought to combine the traditional technique of glulam bending with the technology of a CNC machine (Computer Numerical Control), which allows for infinite possibilities. As a result, the final product is a redesigned traditional chair. The armrests and rockers were bent by the students, using jigs and clamps. The tie assemblies were shaped with the tenoner, and the rods were made with a lathe. The programming of the sides of the chair was done by Mr. Dubé in order to be able to produce three different sizes of chairs, adapting to the different needs of consumers. However, this change in size does not affect the dimensions or the number of other components, which makes the adaptation simple. The result is a chair that is easy to machine and assemble. It is manufactured in mini series as part of the cabinetry program, but the product allows for larger scale manufacturing, and distribution in boxes. The design is intended to be a durable and trendy chair. It will endure trough time, thanks to its style and the freedom of choice in materials. From maple to walnut, from white to black or more vivid colors, the concept allows to modify the chair to the customer’s taste. Meant to blend in with many different backgrounds, the imagination is at its peak.
