The Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont treats ten percent of all dialysis patients in Quebec. A pavilion consolidating all the activities of the dialysis department was awaited for 20 years, while people suffering from kidney failure were cared for in prefabricated trailers with few windows.
With the objective of providing an optimal care facility which would also be conducive to the occupants’ well-being, the firm proposed an airy, open and soothing architecture: the envelope is largely fenestrated, double-height areas have been created for the reception and waiting areas, and the interior treatment is sober and streamlined. The spaces have been configured so that patients, who receive three four-hour hemodialysis treatments per week, have access to maximum natural light, as well as privileged views of the inner courtyard — an intimate therapeutic garden created between the new pavilion and the existing Outpatient Centre.
The largest dialysis centre in Quebec and the most advanced in the country now allows the hospital to treat 200 people a day —up to 70 simultaneously—, in a highly ergonomic environment where dialysis care is provided in a dignified and fluid manner thanks to a number of state-of-the-art equipment, without compromising the architectural quality of the spaces. The 7,000 m² building is integrated into the campus and connected to the hospital via three passages.
