GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 14th edition
Discipline : Architecture
Categories : Public Building / Sports & Leisure Building : Bronze Certification
Framed by the needs of a small city surrounded by a bucolic landscape, Beloeil Aquatics Centre tests architecture’s potential to reveal genius loci. Borne of a design-build architectural competition, with all solutions framed by tight cost constraints, it created a challenging context for excellence. The goal from inception was to leverage delicate and nuanced design strategies to make the most of this community-building opportunity.
The project comprises a pool with semi-Olympic dimensions, office space, a sauna, a recreational pool, children’s slide, bleachers, rest areas and parking. Our design juxtaposes the everyday and the exceptional: a bright white prism rises slightly above the surrounding roofs, while in the evening, this light box reveals both the depth of its structure and the nature of the aquatics activities it hosts.
Energy-efficiency measures include triple glazing, layout to maximize natural light, a white roof, ball filtration and heat recovery systems.
