A couple who own a duplex in Montreal’s Rosemont neighbourhood asked MOA to turn their building into a two-generational residence. The project: design an expansion of the apartment on the second floor where the couple could live and work, and reorganize the layout of the ground floor for the client’s mother.
To meet the need for additional space, MOA proposed to insert a mezzanine on the second floor, in contrast to the interior features of the duplex dating from the early 20th century. The architects thus set up a dialogue between the smooth walls, the narrow proportions, the vertical openings of the second floor and the added open volume of the textured and widely fenestrated «wood box». Designed as a flexible and multifunctional piece, the mezzanine is mainly used as an office for the couple, and is easily converted into a guest room/suite, thanks to a sofa bed and a small bathroom.
Graphic and poetic, fir plywood is predominant in the project. It brings an emotional dimension, with its alterations, knots and veining very present. On the imaginary level, it is also intended to reflect the expression of Quebec’s Nordicity.
Married to wood, the natural light that diffuses in the new volume provides a precious well-being and also helps to better weather the Montreal winter which, although very long, is usually very sunny.
