This design of the upper floor in a restaurant introduces a pleasant outdoor feeling by integrating installation art and graphic elements. The entire floor is aimed to hold a social club to expand restaurant’s clientele.
The site was poorly lit. Two large-scale skylights, where strong light sharply contrasted the gloomy interior, caused discomfort to the eyes.
The owner proposed birch elements for personal memories. The design developed it into a birch theme of inviting sifted natural light through branches and leaves under the skylights to create a soft and pleasant ambiance.
The place is divided into two function areas: 1) a lounge under one skylight emphasizes the outdoor feeling with wide benches for relaxing. Birch trunks are used as divider and visual connection to next area; 2) a dining zone features a long group dining table that reflects the central skylight above and forms a visual axis from the innermost lounge towards the outermost street front arched window.
Some 3000 handmade translucent leaves were installed. Both sides applied with a mix of pouring medium and acrylic colors, bunches attached with crystal faceted glass beads, creating a multitude of transparency and a twinkling feel resembling the forest dew. This setting naturally cooled down the area under the big skylight in hot summer days.
A social club was created and hosted various social events to the public. It effectively supported the business of the restaurant and promoted its popularity.
