GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 14th edition
Discipline : Architecture
Categories : Public Building / Sports & Leisure Building : Gold Certification
The program of the new pavilion is structured around four main buildings housing administrative, public, sanitary and storage functions. By dividing the program into several buildings (all connected), the team was able to make it all on a human scale, allowing users to develop proximity to the site.
By removing the facades, interstices are formed between the buildings, allowing the creation of viable and protected outdoor spaces. This configuration also promotes links with the outside and allows the frame to integrate well into the site.
The materials (cedar shingle, slate shingle, cedar clinic and sheet steel) were mainly chosen for their rustic and natural appearance, reflecting the northern landscape of the site and the activities offered there. In order to emphasize the importance of anchoring the building to its natural environment, we proposed the enhancement of an exposed wood structure, as well as interior and exterior finishes celebrating this material of great richness and warm appearance.
In addition, in the dark, thanks to oversized openings, the simple volumes of the pavilion are transformed into lanterns to liven up the site. Open to the general public, it was essential that the building be accessible to all and that the materials and finishes offered be durable and easy to maintain in order to prolong its useful life as much as possible and minimize operating costs.
