GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 14th edition
Discipline : Urban Design, Landscape Architecture & Landscaping
Categories : Urban Design / Urban Design Plan : Platinum Winner
Located at the foot of the emblematic Mount Royal, the project is a visionary attempt at bringing biodiversity right in the heart of downtown Montréal. It introduces the idea of a small but significant wooded area, evocative of a Laurentian forest, to replace a four-lane avenue. Innovative water management and a strategy to attract birds and other small fauna are part of this unique endeavour.
Various amenities and social spaces are part of the project allowing passersby to stop and enjoy the transformed streetscape and heritage views all year round. Rainwater and melting snow, channelled along a slight depression in the esplanade’s pavement will become an ephemeral stream, eventually ending in the water garden, at the southern end of this gently sloping site. The Grand Foyer, at times auditorium, at times water square, lends itself to a variety of events all through the year. In its centre a ring of fire is lit in the winter to warm up those lingering around despite the cold weather.
