GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 14th edition
Discipline : Architecture
Categories : Public Building / School & Preschool Education Building : Silver Certification
Designed by ABCP architecture, the Alexander-Wolff school expansion project involves adding 15 new classrooms and a sports facility to the existing school. These new classes are located to create a large hall where the new and the existing buildings meet, becoming a new reception area and a social hub for the school. As the main attraction of this central pole, a large wooden staircase connects the levels and conceals a playful cave, while modulating the space and expression of the facade. Installed in the Canadian style, the stainless steel panels affirm the contemporaneity of the new building, while making a nod to the existing building by its mirror effect. The facades are punctuated by color gradients inserts, which are used in the artwork of Michel Saulnier who accompanies the students on their arrival to school. On the other hand, the new sports facility fits in continuity of the existing sports fields with a structure of beams and glulam timber decks, but opens towards the school park through a large glass wall. The new spaces of the Alexander-Wolff School make it a bright, safe, fun and an attractive living environment, promoting students' academic success.
