GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 11th edition
The Blue Steel kitchen of a Mount Royal neighbouring home is an elegant manifestation of refinement through the harshness of steel. A design by ARCHITEM Wolff Shapiro Kuskowski architectes.
The customers wanted their kitchen to be highly functional both in day-to-day needs and when hosting guests. The space is set up in two activity zones: the kids’ zone and the dining room. Elements are laid out around two kitchen islands: one of solid granite that incorporates a sink and one of walnut slabs that integrates a cooktop and breakfast counter. Walnut, steel and granite, materials inspired by the natural environment of the mountain nearby, create a calm feeling. Of an undeniable richness, the heat-laminated steel of the panels serves as a dramatic backdrop to the islands.
The jury rewards the consistency and repetition of details elsewhere in the house. Here is an audacious idea and an acute execution of choices that reminds us of the hot and cold duality of the art of cooking.
