Une nature tissée serrée

By : La bande à Paul

GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN 18th edition

Discipline : Interior Design

Categories : Culture, Sport & Leisure / Museum & Gallery : Gold certification

The Montreal Biodome, an entity of Space for Life, opened its doors in 1992. This iconic place, installed in the former velodrome of the 1976 Olympic Games, has been hosting living species that delight visitors for decades. In any season, the Biodome offers the perfect family outing with its five ecosystems of the Americas gathered under one roof, offering a walk like in nature, but in an urban setting. A place of wonder, learning, and environmental commitment, it is also a must-see tourist attraction in Montreal. In 2020, after two years of work to refresh its facilities and offer new exciting experiences to its audiences, the institution reopened its doors. In this context, the very popular exploration hall located on the lower level of the building also needed to be completely redesigned. This task was entrusted to La bande à Paul. It was in a spirit of continuity since the firm had actively contributed to the grand renewal project of the institution with its Bio-Machine, which, thanks to an ingenious multimedia interface, allows exploring behind the scenes of the Biodome. For this task, La bande à Paul had to completely revamp a discovery room very much loved by the public, notably offering new ways to interact with the collection of naturalized specimens held by the Biodome. A collaborative work was done so that, starting from similar content, the experience was still completely redesigned, sowing amazement and curiosity among people familiar with this mediation venue. It should be noted that the space being relatively restricted, inventiveness was required to fully occupy it while preserving the quality of the visiting experience and safe circulation. These challenges have been met. Since its opening, the exhibition Tissée serrée has been extremely appreciated, both by the public and by the institution's staff. It presents familiar collections from a fresh perspective, giving them a different interest and highlighting some unsuspected riches.
